O jovem maestro de 43 anos sucederá o inglês Sir Simon Rattle que está no cargo desde 2002. Atualmente Petrenko é diretor da Ópera Estatal da Bavária. A escolha do novo maestro movimentou o mundo musical e a mídia com especulações e rumores nos últimos meses, já que a orquestra é considerada umas das 5 melhores do mundo.
