regram @seattlepromusica The middle movement of Leonard Bernstein’s "Chichester Psalms" quotes Psalm 23 (“The Lord is my shepherd”), a passage that is traditionally read as the words of King David. Hebrew Scriptures describe King David as a field shepherd during his youth, and Bernstein has set this text for alto solo with specific instructions that it be sung by a boy soloist. This creates a powerful contrast between the peace of Psalm 23 and the menace of Psalm 2 (“Why do the nations rage?”). Our soloist for our February 25 and 26 concerts is Alex Zuniga who comes to us from Joseph Crnko and Northwest Boychoir. Alex is 14 and an eighth grader at Showalter Middle School in Tukwila where he’s involved in student government and also plays percussion in the school band. He’s been singing with Northwest Boychoir since he was 8 and has performed on multiple recordings with them. His recent solo work includes starring as Amahl in “Amahl and the Night Visitors” and soloing in Seattle Symphony’s performance of “Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring”. On top of all this, he studies piano, creates and writes music, and volunteers for the Special Olympics. We’re very much looking forward to performing with Alex for Chichester Psalms on February 25 and 26.
