Issa Rae Goes To Church For ‘The Choir’, Her Latest Web Series

News Source: Tubefilter

For her newest project, the Awkward Black Girl is stepping behind the camera. Issa Rae is the director in charge of The Choir, a web series about a church musical group that is, to say the least, untraditional.

The Choir lives on Alright TV, a multicultural, faith-friendly YouTube channel that has previously debuted series featuring notable figures like Glozell and Deion Sanders. While many of Alright’s other shows only relate to the church obtusely, The Choir‘s characters make up a young group of performers trying to liven up their congregation. The resulting spectacle is a satirical look at modern black churches.

Meat and greet: Man Choir brings in the SNAGs

News Source: The Age

Dave Garnham of the Darwin Choir of Man.

Like an army marches on its stomach, the Choir of Man's harmonies are fuelled by beer and charred meat. Bearded blokes arrive at a warehouse in a Darwin industrial estate, wander out the back and crack open stubbies to warm up their vocal cords while band members tune a banjo and a dobro (guitar) in the corner.

This unlikely gang of public servants, engineers, students and shopkeepers is the brainchild of singer-songwriter David Garnham, who grew up in Wonthaggi and Phillip Island before following a girl up north seven years ago. The relationship didn't last but he fell in love with this most manly of towns, which he now calls home.
