regram @cnconcerts O For the Wings of a Dove The anthem Hear My Prayer is known for its famous solo ‘O for the wings of a dove’. The piece was commissioned for a concert in London on New Year’s Day, 1844. The text is based on Psalm 55 and the work was to prove particularly significant for Mendelssohn’s librettist, William Bartholomew, who would later marry the organist who had been engaged to play that evening! In Psalm 55, the protagonist prays for deliverance from circling enemies. Mendelssohn uses the choir in unison to give antiphonal and dramatic expression to the soloists’ anxious cries ‘The godless come fast’. A brief recitative follows, in which his soul ‘with terror is oppressed’ and, finally, in the solo, he yearns for a pair of wings to escape far from his problems to a place of rest. Who can’t identify with that? Come and escape your cares with Caius College Chapel Choir and some of the most sublime choral music ever written at City Hall in Central on 30th Aug.
