GRAND RAPIDS – In November 1918, World War I ended with an armistice, and war-weary people to celebrate peace on earth for the first time in four years.
At Cambridge University in England, a former British Army chaplain organized “A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols” to be held on Christmas Eve.
The service of lessons from the Bible followed by anthems and carols reflecting the readers that was born at King’s College soon spread throughout the English-speaking world.
